Another Colouring Book
This body of work was born from a feeling of creative frustration and situational staleness following graduation. During this period I was given three colouring books from well-meaning friends and family. These gifts led me to question notions of creative success, millennial adulthood and maturity. I left the soaring rental prices of Edinburgh centre and began to use the longer commute to document the everyday. Photographically the images capture the cyclical flatness of a typical working week - but by using analogue printing and hand-colouring techniques these scenes are elevated into something illusory. In this way I have created another colouring book of day-to-day observations. What remains is a document of the interim between youth and adulthood, and a wider reflection upon what we consider beautiful, successful and appropriate.
This series was exhibited as part of Projects 18: Fresh Focus at Stills: Centre for Photography, Edinburgh. (June 2018)
An adapted presentation of this project was also published as part of WORKBOOK, a group publication to accompany the exhibition. This can be purchased at Stills: Centre for Photography.
Another Colouring Book was also exhibited alongside additional process material at The Cameo Bar, Edinburgh. (Sept - Oct 2018)
