Self / conscious
This is a film I made between 2013 and 2015, attempting to un-learn the negativity I had amassed toward my twenty three year old body. I don't for a second imagine that my adolescent experience was in any way different to the millions of other young women that must experience scrutiny, ridicule, public criticism, private criticism and paranoia over their presentation of themselves. It is so ingrained into our society that it takes time and work to realise there is a problem to begin with. This marks the beginning of that work. I could bore you with details: the ways in which we believe we are perpetually micro-managing our 'flaws' and rehearsing our 'performances' but I'm hoping in some ways this will perhaps speak for itself.
Music by Jake Downs, for which I am forever grateful.
